Shockwave Therapy

What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Radial shockwave therapy uses high pressured acoustic shockwaves that travel through the skin to break down targeted tissue and stimulate tissue repair. Essentially it kick starts the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Shockwave therapy is a research proven treatment approach effective in assisting many chronic musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Shin splints
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Golfers Elbow
  • Calcification of the shoulder
  • Patella tendinopathy
  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
  • Hamstring tendinopathy
  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy
  • Gluteal tendinopathy
  • ITB syndrome

What Does A Shockwave Therapy Session Involve?

Radial shockwave therapy is a safe, non-invasive procedure. A contact gel is applied to the treatment area, then a hand held device is applied to the skin. The device delivers the acoustic waves in a controlled and focused manner typically for 3-5 minutes per injured area. A course of shockwave therapy usually consists of weekly treatments for 3-6 weeks, conditions more chronic or significant in nature are likely to require a longer treatment course.

Most patients experience an initial pain reduction and a greater range of movement immediately after the procedure. This is followed by further improvement over time as the tissue remodels and repairs.
