Outer Hip Pain? It Could Be Hip Tendinopathy

Pain on the outside of the hip is a common complaint we see at Yarra Ranges Osteopathy. One possible cause of this type of pain is hip tendinopathy, which involves irritation of the tendons around the outer hip, often affecting the gluteal tendons.

What is Hip Tendinopathy?

Hip tendinopathy refers to changes in the tendons that attach the gluteal muscles to the outer hip. These tendons play an important role in stabilising the pelvis during activities such as walking, running and standing on one leg.

When these tendons become irritated or overloaded, it can lead to pain and reduced function.

Common Symptoms

Hip tendinopathy often presents as:

Symptoms can vary from mild discomfort to more persistent pain that impacts daily activities.

What Causes It?

Hip tendinopathy is often related to load and movement patterns. It may develop due to:

Positions that place direct compression on the tendon, such as crossing the legs or lying directly on the affected side, may aggravate symptoms.

How is it Managed?

Management of hip tendinopathy typically focuses on gradual loading and improving the tendon’s capacity to tolerate movement.

This may include:

Complete rest is generally not recommended, as tendons respond best to appropriate, progressive loading.
