Dry Needling Now Available at Yarra Ranges Osteopathy
We are pleased to announce that dry needling is now available at Yarra Ranges Osteopathy, with Dr Indigo Clyde trained to incorporate this technique as part of osteopathic treatment when clinically appropriate.
Dry needling is a technique used by trained healthcare practitioners that may be included as part of a broader treatment plan for certain musculoskeletal conditions.
What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling involves the use of very fine, sterile needles inserted into specific areas of muscle, often referred to as myofascial trigger points. These areas can sometimes become sensitive, tight or overactive following injury, overuse or prolonged postural strain.
The aim of dry needling is to assist in addressing muscle tension and to support improved movement when used alongside other treatments such as manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation and patient education.

Conditions Dry Needling May Be Used For
Dry needling may be considered as part of the management of a range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:
- Muscle tension and trigger points
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Headaches and jaw tension
- Low back and hip pain
- Sciatic-type symptoms
- Tendon-related pain (tendinopathies)
- Plantar heel pain (plantar fasciitis)
- Sports-related muscle tightness or overuse injuries
Potential Benefits
When used appropriately as part of a treatment plan, dry needling may assist with:
- Reducing muscle tension
- Addressing sensitive trigger points
- Supporting improved movement and muscle function
- Complementing hands-on treatment and rehabilitation exercises
Possible Side Effects
Dry needling is generally well tolerated when performed by appropriately trained practitioners, however side effects can occur. These may include:
- Mild temporary soreness at the treatment site
- Light bruising
- Fatigue following treatment
- Occasionally dizziness or light-headedness
There is also an extremely rare risk of pneumothorax (collapsed lung) when needling near the rib cage, which practitioners manage through appropriate training, technique and safety procedures.
Is Dry Needling Right for You?
Dry needling is not appropriate for every condition or every patient. During your appointment, Dr Indigo Clyde will discuss whether dry needling may be suitable for your presentation, explain the procedure and obtain your consent before treatment. Patients are always welcome to decline dry needling and choose alternative treatment options.
